Black-and-White Poznań

Housed in the historic cathedral lock building on Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island), Galeria Śluza (Lock Gallery) hosts temporary exhibitions that are modern in both form and content. Managed by the Porta Posnania Heritage Centre, the gallery presents narratives tied to historic and contemporary Poznań.

On 25 October, a new exhibition will open, exploring life in the city during the months and years immediately following the Second World War. What challenges did residents face? How did they secure housing, food and clothing? Where did they work and study? In a city devastated by war, was there still room for culture and entertainment?

The early post-war months were marked by both joyful relief at the end of the fighting and hope for a return to normalcy, even as uncertainty loomed large. It was a time of reconstruction and learning to live anew, yet also marked by unease as a communist power structure began to take hold. Through the exhibition, visitors encounter testimonies from those who personally endured the hardships of life in Poznań in the war's immediate aftermath.
