Exhibition: The Water Trial and Unbearable Beauty (Próba wody i nieznośne piękno) by Agnieszka Błędowska
The exhibition explores two themes. The water ordeal was a cruel means of proof used in witch trials during the witch hunts. It was a paradoxical act, with no just conclusion. The accused was tied up and thrown into the water - if she sank, she was considered innocent; if she floated, she was considered a witch and subjected to further torture. The ordeal was based on the belief that the pure water would reject the perpetrator.
This set of classic cutout collages is a subversive attempt to recount the aesthetic canons imposed on contemporary women. They are meaningful puzzles that subject this image to symbolic destruction. At the same time, it confronts models of femininity dictated by the media; in ideal patterns, variations, and incarnations - generated and unbearably beautiful.
