Exhibition opening: Mottainai by Daria Mielcarzewicz
Mottainai - a Japanese word that briefly describes the 5R principle - refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, rot.
But for the Japanese there is something more in this word. In the literal sense it means: "mottai" (meaning or sacredness) and "nai" (lack). And it is most often translated into Polish as "it's a pity to waste". Meanwhile, the meaning of this word is much deeper: the unused potential of things. The term is used both in a situation when things or people (!) only use part of their capabilities, and in a situation when something is thrown away that can still be used. But also when an item is thrown away that can be repaired or that someone may need or that could be used to make something else. Finally - when you do not use the "waste" that nature gives us in the cycle of seasons (e.g. leaves).
But MOTTAINAI is also being grateful for nature and respecting its limited resources. And it is the broadest meaning of this profound word that interests the artist the most.
