Krypta Zasłużonych Wielkopolan (The Crypt for Eminent Wielkopolskans in St Adalbert's Church)

Description

The crypt of the eminent at Poznań's St. Adalbert Church dates back to 1923. It was then that ashes of eminent Wielkopolska residents were first moved to the church. Its southern nave holds the sarcophagus of Karol Marcinkowski, a 19th-century physician and social activist. St. Antoni's Chapel features epitaphs to historical figures buried in the Crypt of the Eminent underneath the church.

The Chapel holds the remains of Józef Wybicki, the author of the Polish national anthem, Antoni Kosiński, a co-founder of the Dąbrowski Legions, Heliodor Święcicki, the founder and first rector of the University of Poznań, Feliks Nowowiejski, the composer of music to the "Rota" ("The Oath") poem, and Tadeusz Szeligowski, also a composer. It is there that the heart of Gen. Jan Henryk Dąbrowski was ultimately placed. Other prominent Poznanians have been buried at the Cemetery of Eminent Wielkopolska Residents near the church of the Discalced Carmelites, located across the street from St. Adalbert's Church.
