Święty Marcin Street (Saint Martin Street) is the main thoroughfare across the centre of Poznań, which runs all the way to the Old Town past the historic Imperial Castle and the modernist Alfa skyscrapers. The tradition of holding a colourful parade on 11 November (which is the nameday of Marcin) was established in 1994 by the Zamek (Castle) Cultural Centre. It provides an opportunity not only to hold a large cultural picnic but also to joyfully celebrate the national Independence Day, which coincides with that date. Symbols of the parade include a figure of Saint Martin mounted on a white horse and Saint Martin's croissant: a specialty of local confectioners who carefully guard its unique recipe.
