Kirszenbaum is like Wyspiański on mephedrone. The Krakow duo enlivens the post-folk wreckage, goads it into new directions and fries it on their loopers, clashing Tom Waits and Junip with a Slavic oomph. Zola shouts at the klezmers, Henry Miller dances with the Moomins, all of which culminates in a melancholic, intertextual merry-go-round. On hearing them, Kierkegaard wrote, "It's jazz, I guess." Nothing of the kind. As far as music goes, the robustly eclectic style of the project relies on close collaboration of guitars, post-rock violins and loops recorded live. As a result, we obtain a very contemporary and highly singular interpretation of Slavic, klezmer, and Anglo-Saxon folk, with a dynamic, vocal duet of whispers and screams on top of it.
